Tuesday, 18 May 2004 Vivo tra il Belgio e l'Italia con soste mensili in Francia per seguire lo stravagante circo del Parlamento Europeo dove lavoro occupandomi di affari esteri. Di formazione sono medico veterinario, professione che ancora pratico nei ritagli di tempo. A volte mi sembra di vivere due vite allo stesso tempo, distinte e distanti fra di loro. A volte, invece, mi rendo conto che si tratta di un'unica vita divisa fra la pioggia di Bruxelles e la nebbia della pianura padana. Il sole e il cielo sono, però, gli stessi e rappresentano un punto di riferimento fisso dovunque mi trovi. E' grazie alle lunghe notti belghe che posso ripensare con distacco all'Italia e grazie alle pause italiane posso rivisitare con occhi diversi il Belgio. Ed è grazie alla chitarra che viene spesso la voglia di mettere in musica le mie impressioni quasi per fissarle nella memoria prima che si consumino fra uno spostamento e l'altro. Scrivere fa parte del mio lavoro quotidiano. Così come faccio articoli per giornali e riviste scrivo canzoni riprendendo i temi che normalmente sviluppo in prosa. E questi temi non possono non avere a che fare con il mio lavoro e il tipo di vita che conduco. Non so se devo ritenermi un privilegiato od un condannato per la vita che faccio oppure se questa è solo un eccezione che presto diventerà regola in una Europa che muta rapidamente e offre opportunità impensabili fino a pochi anni orsono. I miei suonatori costituiscono un elemento fondamentale di questo progetto musicale. Senza di loro, forse, le mie canzoni avrebbero continuato a rimanere chiuse in un cassetto. Marcello Bergamaschi, oltre che ad essere mio fratello, è un polistrumentista di assoluto valore appassionato di musica popolare e dei relativi strumenti che dà un originale tocco etnico a tutte le mie composizioni. Stefano Dell'amico è l'arrangiatore di tutti i brani del gruppo a cui contribuisce anche con la sua invidiabile tecnica alle tastiere. Lorenzo Bellini mi accompagna brillantemente al basso mentre Massimo Savioli si sfoga alla batteria così come spazia abitualmente con proverbiale abilità fra i più disparati generi musicali. Era il maggio del 1977 quando, giovane cantautore di belle speranze, mi chiesero di fare da spalla a Francesco Guccini che arrivava in tournè a Viadana, il mio paese, un anonimo comune della provincia di Mantova. Già allora mi dilettavo a scrivere canzoni facendo il verso al genere cantautoriale, quello che a quei tempi andava per la maggiore. L'anno di studio trascorso negli Stati Uniti mi aveva permesso di conoscere i grandi folk-singer americani da cui gli autori italiani avevano attinto a piene mani. Continuai per qualche tempo a fare concerti senza pretese dove capitava. Poi irruppe la politica con il progetto di una centrale nucleare che l'ENEL doveva costruire in loco. Divenni nel 1983 il primo consigliere verde eletto in Italia e più tardi uno dei fondatori delle Liste Verdi a livello nazionale. Le manifestazioni anti-nucleari, i blocchi, l'esperienza del carcere e poi la segreteria dei Verdi Europei continuando ad esercitare la mia professione di veterinario fino alla fine del 1994 quando Alexander Langer, a mio avviso uno dei più grandi e sottovalutati politici italiani, mi telefonò un giorno per chiedermi di assisterlo alla Commissione Affari Esteri al Parlamento Europeo. A Bruxelles ho ripreso in mano la chitarra, il primo amore non si scorda mai. Girando l'Europa ho avuto l'opportunità di conoscere i principali cantautori dei maggiori paesi. Il testo è la prima cosa che ascolto di una canzone. Nei miei testi cerco di raccontare la mia vita, la vita di un europeo trascinato in un progetto di cui la maggior parte dei cittadini del continente ignora i contorni. Ho scritto una cinquantina di canzoni, ogni viaggio una esperienza ed un percorso diverso. Faccio ancora concerti dove capita ma oggi assieme a rodati musicisti che con la loro professionalità sanno rendere più gradevoli testi dai contenuti spesso ostici. Sono nato a Viadana (MN) dove ancora risiedo nei fine settimana. Quando non ci sono è perché sono in qualche angolo del continente o del Mediterraneo a discutere di pace, diritti dell'uomo e prevenzione dei conflitti. www.paolobergamaschi.it I live in between Belgium and Italy, with monthly stays in France, in order to follow the extravagant circus of the European Parliament, where I work as a Foreign Affairs specialist. I am a veterinary surgeon by profession and I still practice in my spare time. Sometimes I get the impression that I am living two totally distinct lives at the same time. Other times, instead, I realize that in reality it is only one life divided between the Brussels rain and the fog in the Po valley. However, the sun and the sky are the same and therefore represent for me a fixed reference point wherever I go. Thanks to the long Belgian nights I can think of Italy from a distance and thanks to my Italian breaks I can revisit Belgium from a different perspective. Then, thanks to my guitar, I often feel like putting to music my impressions as if to fix them in memory before they get lost between one trip and another. Writing has become part of my daily job. On one hand I write articles for newspapers and magazines, on the other I write songs utilizing the topics I normally have treated in my journalistic writing. It is obvious that these topics have got a lot to do with my work and the type of life that I lead. I do not exactly know whether I should consider myself to be a privileged person or a damned one for the type of life that I lead. Or maybe my way of life is only an exception that will soon become the rule in a rapidly changing Europe that offers opportunities which were unthinkable of until a few years ago. My accompanying group constitutes an essential component of my musical project. It is quite possible that, without them, would have remained locked in a drawer. Apart from being my brother Marcello Bergamaschi is a versatile and talented player of different instruments. He is fascinated by folk music and its peculiar instruments and he gives an original ethnic touch to all my songs. Stefano Dell'Amico does all the musical arrangements of my group's songs and he also gives a special contribution to their rendering thanks to his enviable technique at the keyboards. Lorenzo Bellini is an admirable and brilliant base player whilst Massimo Savioli lets himself go at the drums. He is able to flit from one musical genre to another completely different one with extreme dexterity. It was in May 1977 when , being a young songwriter, I was asked to form part of the supporting group for Frencesco Guccini, who was stopping on his tour in Viadana, my home town, an anonymous little municipality in the province of Mantova. Already in those times I used to enjoy writing songs, whilst trying to imitate the chansonnier style which was so popular at those times. During the year I spent in the US I was able to get to know better the great American folk-singers who had greatly inspired the Italian songwriters. For some time I continued to take part in modest concerts, whenever these happened to take place. Then I entered politics, when the Italian electric company ENEL planned to build a nuclear power station in my area. In 1983 I became the first elected local Green councillor in Italy. Later, I was one of the founders of the Green Lists at national level. Whilst practicing my profession as a veterinarian I continued being involved in politics : anti-nuclear demonstrations, blockades, prison experience and forming part of the secretariat of the European Greens. All this until the end of 1994 when Alexander Langer, in my opinion one of the greatest and, at the same time, most undervalued Italian politicians, phoned me up one day and asked me to assist him in the Foreign Affairs Committee at the European Parliament. In Brussels I started playing with my first unforgettable love, my guitar. Having travelled all over Europe I have had the opportunity to get to know the major singers and songwriters of most countries. The text is the first thing I listen to in a song. In my texts I try to recount my life, the life of a European who has been involved in a project whose details are ignored by the majority of the European citizens. I have written around 50 songs. Each voyage has meant a different route and a different experience. I still give concerts wherever it is possible but today I do this together with experienced musicians who, thanks to their professionality, know how to render much more palatable and pleasant texts whose contents are often tough. I was born in Viadana (MN) where I still live in the week-ends. When I am not there it is because I am in some corner of Europe or the Mediterranean to discuss about peace, human rights and conflict prevention.
